More groundbreaking than the Wii?

If you know me, you know I don't think that Nintendo's little white messiah box, the Wii, is all that ground breaking. It's kinda archaic. The sixaxis on the PS3 impresses me more from a technological standpoint. But Microsoft seems to be plotting a move that could be truly ground breaking to the games industry.

The rumor that has surfaced indicates that MS could be licensing xBox360 tech to third parties, who in turn would create new HARDWARE, that would play 360 software. That's basically like how Sony, or whoever invented the Compact Disk format, allowing everyone and their grandma to make their own CD players. "Same difference" with the BluRay.

This could really give the 360 some longevity against the onslaught/juggernaught that is the PS3, which Sony touts having a 10 year lifespan. If anyone could by a cheap ass video game system that plays 360 discs, that ensures a huge market share for that software, and essentially elevates the 360 format above the others, kinda making it the "official" video game format. Like a CD, or I guess mp3 now, the official music format.

Just look at the format war between Bluray and HDDVD, or whatever it's acronym is. Bluray essentially won by having more supporters in the form of studios and players. If the xbox360 format can be easily played on a variety of cheap consoles, this balloons it's market share, and more developers will want to create software for it.

dayum!
