still working...
It's been a while since I've worked on a comic project of my own. Sure, the past few years I've done tons of page layouts, writing and illustration as part of my day job, but it's been a few good years since I've solely focused on creating one comic, all by my lonesome.
I don't count the BFX online comic, or the countless pages of KC I've toiled on that may never see the light of day. As those were just, experiments, and fun. Fooling. The amount of pressure I put on myself totally changes when I put pencil to paper knowing full well that the work I'm doing will be out there, representing me in print is its own beast entirely. I'm not sure why I do it, but I'll put money down that many artists feel this way.
Which sort of puts me in a destined to fail position, as visually with Kissing Chaos, I want to capture an effortless, scratchy style. Kind of like the pages were taken straight out of my sketchbook. I love how the art in my sketchbook, there's a quality of nonchalant confidence in the line work. This quality totally disappears when I try to make an "actual" page. Dunno why.
At any rate, I strive on. I'm a little behind schedule, but the comic should be done just as I head to Mocca. A brand new KC comic for the people. It's more of a teaser for the Sweet Nothings comic coming this fall; I think I may have mentioned that. I decided to take a drastic turn in terms of the artwork. In the past I relied heavily on post production effects on the computer to finalize my art. In the past few years I've grown tired of CG and what not, and I'm really moving toward natural media. I'm not busting out the inks just yet for this comic, but I'm going to keep the pages in their raw form this time around. And really make an attempt at capturing a sensation that the pages were ripped from my sketchbook!
Click here for a preview of the art from the comic These panels are in random order, taken from the pages I've drawn thus far. You may notice my art style is a little different from when I last did a KC comic over 2 years ago!
I hope that's cool!
