previews up

Just a quick note to say that the doodle in the header above will change daily.

Also, it took some doing, but I finally got the Kissing Chaos: Social Obligation preview online over at kissingchaos.com.

It's a 5 page preview of the gritty/grimy mini comic, with a story the likes of which may never grace the printed page again, and a sketchy art style that I've been searching for for a while. It's not too be missed.

Sorry if it seems like I'm pimping this one like mad, but I just want to make sure all the Kissing Chaos fans out there know that there are finally some new comics! And I think putting this one together has given me a taste for blood, and opened the flood gates!

So, click on the image to check out the preview!

okay, so it ain't pretty...

Yet…

I’ve finally customized this WordPress thing just enough that I can live it with. It’s not the shiniest website on the block, but I’ll keep tuning it up as the days go by. What can I say, I’m a tweaker.

IF YOU ARE JSUT CHECKING OUT THIS BLOG, PLEASE CHECK OUT mydestroyer.com FOR THE OFFICIAL BLOG OF WHICH I AM TYPING.

Right...

So as of this date, the mydestroyer.com blog has been bumped back up to first string. And the Blogger one has been delegated to back up status, waiting in the wings should heaven’s wrath decide to smite this site once again.

While I don’t fancy myself a “blogger”, I’ll keep this “blog” updated as much as possible. If you know me, that means little more than I’ll “try” to update as much as I can. This could be anywhere between two or three times a day, to two or three times a week. I’ll aim for the former.

Also, since I’m doing all my website stuff today, I’ll be getting up the preview pages to KC: SOCIAL OBLIGATION online later this afternoon.

Peace!

i give up...

Web coding may have won the battle... but the war isn't over just yet.

I've been using WordPress to create a new blog site. In my megalomaniacal madness, I crave to control everything I put on the web. I dunno, call me Lex Luthor or whatever, but I need to have everything on my server. I know, it's crazy.

Anyway, in this bid for control, I've been trying to create a nice looking blog site that runs from my server. This whole blogger thing just doesn't sit well with me for some reason. As you may know, I'm not the most tech savvy dude in the room, especially when it comes to web design and coding. So, when my previous greymatter blog was banned from the server, I moved on to WordPress and PHP. Just as I figured out all the crap associated with Greymatter. (I can see all the designers well versed in coding rolling their eyes right about now! But hey, I'm less than a novice when it comes to this crap!)

So, the past little while I've been trying to figure out how to customize a Wordpress blog to my liking, and have been rather unsuccessful. I'm sure I'll figure it out, but the last month has been too busy, what with the writing and drawing I have to do. These comics don't grow on trees, you know.

That brings me to my current situation. I'm going to put up the wordpress blog, in it's basic form. Pretty much the default design. And slowly but surely, I'll customize it, as time allows. So hopefully it'll morph into a wicked ADC style blog without anyone noticing. Of course, the blog will be fully functional, and y'all can post comments and all that jazz there... This site will be up soon!

Also, I'll put up a few preview pages to the new KC comic, SOCIAL OBLIGATION online tomorrow!

back to the lab

I just got back from NYC, where I attended the Museum of Cartoon and Comic arts Festival Quite the fancy name for a comic convention, but whatever.

It wicked, yo! I had a pretty good time sitting at my first Mocca table, trying to pimp my wares and all that. Had an even better time hanging with my "convention" buddies. You know, the comic creator folk that I only see at various comic industry related events and shows. I spent some time catching up with everybody, kinda like going to summer camp or some yearly high school reunion centered around a love for art and comics. It's fun. The best part is swapping comics and other product with other creators. Brian Wood is always kind and let's me grab comics off him for free. I did the swap thing with so many folks, when I opened my bag, I couldn't even remember who I got some of these comics from. Aside from comics, I got some cooking tips from Becky Cloonan, so that was cool. Oddly enough, I spent more time hanging out and talking with friends from my local comic scene in Toronto, than networking with new people. There's a powerful comics scene in the T-dot, and it seemed like at least half of them were in NY this weekend.

Normally at comic conventions, it's all about partying all night, getting wasted and coming to the convention the next day to interact with fans in a drunken stupor. This time around I figured I'd be a total tourist, and go sight seeing with every free moment I got. NYC is a killer city, and makes Toronto look like a little village by comparison. I must've lost like 10 pounds just walking everywhere. I love the NYC subway system. Brilliant. Confusing, but brilliant. And just as I got a hang of it, I had to fly home. And rest assured by the next time I'm in NYC, I'll have forgotten everything!

KC went over pretty well! I sold a number of KC vol.1s, and almost all of the KC: SOCIAL OBLIGATION mini comics that I printed up. A few people got some inked sketches from me. It was one of the first times I inked with a chinese brush at a convention. My nerves were shot! But the end results were pretty sweet! I'll post some here when I yank them off my camera. I wasn't sure what to expect from the crowd, in terms of reaction to KC. I must admit I felt a little out of place, in a room surrounded by more cartoony and cute comics. Having a table right next to Mal and his Scott Pilgrim book certainly helped get the traffic in our corner of the convention, but I'm sure most Scott Pilgrim fans wouldn't take a second look at KC, at least from glancing at the covers or T-shirts. It did seem like cute and cartoony was the order of the day, though I might of had an entirely different con experience had I been placed next to Brian Wood or Rob G. But it's all good! The KC fans did find me, and I signed a number of books people have purchased from their local shops. I few people cam up to me and said their friends sent them to get their books signed. That is actually a regular occurrence at comic cons for me. People coming up to me saying their best friend, or their wife or the girlfriend love my book. It's kinda funny I guess.

One great thing was when I talked with Derrick KC, the guest coordinator (who hooked me up with the table), he mentioned that his younger sister, who never liked comics, was rummaging through his room one day, and saw KC Vol.1. She was intrigued by the cover, and decided to read it, surprised at first that it was a comic. She fell in love, and has since read every KC comic, and is dying for more. Also, since her first taste of KC, she's been getting into all kinds of books, and is now a full fledged comic fan. All thanks to KC. It's an honor to have affected someone that way with my work!

Anyway, that's it for this con report. I'm all pumped and will be turning out new KC comics starting now! These will appear online shortly. In the meantime, if you didn't pick one up at the convention, you should order your own copy of KC: SOCIAL OBLIGATION.

The mini comic is 21 pages long, and is the first brand new KC comic in a few years. This one opens the flood gates, and there will be much more KC! However, this comic is a very limited edition (not limited by a certain number, but limited by when I feel like stopping the print run... which will be soon!), and it features characters from both KC volumes. The story hints at what's to come in the SWEET NOTHINGS online storey this fall. The story told within SOCIAL OBLIGATION will never be re-printed or re mastered in anyway, so if you don't get this one, you may never see it again!

Anyway check out the store and get yours today!

I'll put more previews of it, and have it for sale on the website next week. I'll also update the websites fully, with new material and what not... so come back soon!

I won't be online until monday or tuesday, but I'll have much to report!

still working...

It's been a while since I've worked on a comic project of my own. Sure, the past few years I've done tons of page layouts, writing and illustration as part of my day job, but it's been a few good years since I've solely focused on creating one comic, all by my lonesome.

I don't count the BFX online comic, or the countless pages of KC I've toiled on that may never see the light of day. As those were just, experiments, and fun. Fooling. The amount of pressure I put on myself totally changes when I put pencil to paper knowing full well that the work I'm doing will be out there, representing me in print is its own beast entirely. I'm not sure why I do it, but I'll put money down that many artists feel this way.

Which sort of puts me in a destined to fail position, as visually with Kissing Chaos, I want to capture an effortless, scratchy style. Kind of like the pages were taken straight out of my sketchbook. I love how the art in my sketchbook, there's a quality of nonchalant confidence in the line work. This quality totally disappears when I try to make an "actual" page. Dunno why.

At any rate, I strive on. I'm a little behind schedule, but the comic should be done just as I head to Mocca. A brand new KC comic for the people. It's more of a teaser for the Sweet Nothings comic coming this fall; I think I may have mentioned that. I decided to take a drastic turn in terms of the artwork. In the past I relied heavily on post production effects on the computer to finalize my art. In the past few years I've grown tired of CG and what not, and I'm really moving toward natural media. I'm not busting out the inks just yet for this comic, but I'm going to keep the pages in their raw form this time around. And really make an attempt at capturing a sensation that the pages were ripped from my sketchbook!

Click here for a preview of the art from the comic These panels are in random order, taken from the pages I've drawn thus far. You may notice my art style is a little different from when I last did a KC comic over 2 years ago!

I hope that's cool!

oooh...scarey!

I wonder why people are too chicken shite to put 6.6.6 on the movie posters for THE OMEN. They put 6.6.06. While, technically correct, graphically, it looks wack, and c'mon! The entire reason for releasing a movie on a fricken' tuesday is to get that 6+6+6 date as a marketing tool. Le sigh.

I did some major work on the weekend. And most of it on Kissing Chaos! Sweet. I'm really excited to get going again on this book, and I will devote much more time to it, even though I really have to get some freelance work. Got bills to pay, yo!

At this point, I'm knee deep in Mocca-prep. Trying to get this comic done (clearly my goal of finishing it in one weekend did not happen). I'm not worried...yet. Plus, I'm having some issues getting buttons made. But nevertheless, we strive on!

With all the crap I'm doing, I'm not going to get the new website and blog thing rolling until next week. But I'll definitely put some previews of the KC comic I'm doing online before I head to NYC. Stay tuned.

As mentioned in earlier posts, my Canadian-ness shines through every spring, when I get all jock-ified and watch the playoffs of the only sport I follow...hockey. It's even better this year, as one of my fave teams is playing for the big prize! It's a pretty cool feeling, and as bizarre as it seems, I can sort of empathize with those sport nerds in the jerseys and painted faces. Unfortunately, my team the Oilers dropped the series opener to the Carolina Hurricanes. Not only did they lose, but their top goalie (who was instrumental in getting this far)was injured, and won't be back for the rest of the series. It's a jaw dropping turn of events.

Seriously! It is!

Anyway, I'm about to pull an all nighter drawing some Kissing Chaos.

I'll keep the light on!

knuckle up...

Okay... I'm buckling down this weekend to finish up this Kissing Chaos story I've been working on for Mocca. I'm going to ignore any party invites and hanging out that I can, in order to get this thing done.

I've sorta been inspired by the 24 hour comic phenomenon. Though I've been working on it, ever so slowly mind you, I still need to get a huge chunk done. And while it won't exactly be a 24 hour comic (I plan to use the whole weekend), the sentiment is there.

So, I bid you farewell, as I once more dive into the depths of my work. Hopefully when I resurface on monday, I'll have a comic to show y'all!

it's go time.

Wow.

It's the first of June. That's like, 6 months into the year. Is time flying, or is it just me?

I started this blog at the top of the year, without really knowing what will happen. Try as I might to resist joining the online glut of blogs and myspaces, there was something deep inside that urged me to try it. We'll, 5 months later and here I am. And what a 5 months it's been. Sort of? Not really.

I mean, what really happened?

Aside from the numerous technical failures beyond my control (both with my server and my health), was there anything really worth noting about my life or my creative work or anything else?

Sure, I've been toiling away at Kissing Chaos, among other freelance (read: day job) work for months. I even took some time off to focus solely on Kissing Chaos. That period of time was drastically cut short by a surprise trip to the hospital, and about a month of recovery time. Though in the past little while I have put in a lot of hours and turned out many pages of story. But like some overprotective mother, I can't seem to let go, and just allow my creations to run rampant in the blogosphere. So despite my numerous efforts at work, this blog seems to have been rendered useless due to some deranged lack of self confidence.

Anyway. I guess I'm doing that thing, that people do when they go through a midlife crisis. you know, taking stock. Assessing their situation. Wondering how they got, here. Only, rather than examining my whole, life, I'm just zeroing in on this year. A mid-year crisis?

Nevertheless, next week, a brand new KC mini-comic will drop like a bomb on the MoCCa show in NYC. Let's hope I don't freak out and keep all the copies I print up locked in a safe. ;)

Time willing, I'll have my blog proper running from Mydestroyer.com before I go to NY.

In other news, I've been working away at a story, that will appear next year as part of an online comic anthology. I've been chipping away at it for months now, and I'm also writing it up as a film treatment. (I sorta have a connection of sorts to the movie biz). OVer the summer I should start getting some art done for this project. I'm excited, as it's very different from other work I've tackled. Even My Destroyer, of which a preview book is still in the works.

My grand design for the rest of the year is to have numerous projects of mine all come to a head in the fall. Around Sept, I want to release a My Destroyer preview comic. Around that time I want this Kissing Chaos Sweet Nothings story unleashed online. And also in the fall this new comic (currently untitled) will start getting some webspace. Despite the hectic year, I'm still pretty much on schedule. It's just again, I need to make some dough, so walking that tight rope between paying gigs and my creative work is a fine line that I've braved with little success in the past.

I will try.

Here are some of the things keeping me sane:
-the Edmonton Oiler's run for the Stanley Cup
-the Wreckers
-Sarah Harmer
-the Red Chord
-Between the Buried and Me
-Sputnik Sweetheart

enjoy!
